Hi! I’m Mrs. Lusk. I have been a teacher for twenty years now! (I can’t believe that!) Here is a little bit about me. I grew up on a farm near Lewellen, Nebraska (near Lake McConaughy) the fourth of five children. I attended Lewellen Public Grade and High School where I was active in band (I played the flute and saxophone), chorus, swing choir, drama, volleyball, basketball, and track. Basketball was my favorite sport. I loved living on a farm even though we had to work very hard to help make ends meet. I always wanted to be outside with my dad rather than inside doing ‘women’s work’. I was, I guess, considered a tomboy.
After high school I went to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the next 4 ½ years, where I earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. While in college I worked in a daycare center and as a waitress at Valentinos.
My first teaching experience was in a country school just north of where I grew up. I had four students, each in a different grade. I had to bring in fresh water each day for the students, and I often relit the pilot light on the stove two or three times a day in the winter! I felt somewhat like a pioneer teacher out in the middle of the prairie! The school was located by a creek so on warm days we would often each lunch or have a science lesson by the creek. On snowy days we would sometimes go sledding on the nearby hills. It was a special year that I will always remember.
After moving to North Platte, I spent one year as a substitute teacher. I didn’t like it and was determined to get a full-time job. I was hired as a Kindergarten teacher at Hall School, northeast of North Platte, and I spent the next ten years in that position. I taught four years as the fourth grade teacher at Hall before coming to Brady, where I have been for the past five years
I have lived in Brady for 12 years now and I have been married to a big, hairy man named Quentin for 13 ½ years! We have four children. (Can you believe I had always wanted four children?) Their names are Troy, Jenna, Megan, and Blake. Blake is the only one not in school yet. My family is number one in my life and we have a lot of good times together! We love to camp, ride four-wheelers in Halsey, go exploring, and play games.
I feel so lucky to be a teacher! I never wanted to be anything else and I can’t imagine being truly happy doing anything else. It’s where my heart is. Being a teacher in a small school like Brady is an extra bonus! Knowing everyone gives our school a family-like atmosphere. We all look out for each other and help take care of each other. It’s great to be a part of a positive, growing school like Brady.
